Gérard Depardieu Faces Trial for Alleged Sexual Assaults

Actor Gérard Depardieu’s Trial for Sexual Assault Charges

French actor Gérard Depardieu, aged 76, is currently on trial in Paris, facing charges of sexual assault involving two women during the 2021 filming of “Les Volets Verts” (“The Green Shutters”). The alleged victims, a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant director, accuse Depardieu of inappropriate touching and obscene comments on set.

Depardieu has denied the allegations, acknowledging that while his behavior might be perceived as boorish, he did not engage in the actions described. His attorney, Jérémy Assous, has called for the dismissal of the case, citing procedural deficiencies and questioning the credibility of the investigation.

The trial has attracted significant public attention, with feminist groups demonstrating outside the courthouse, highlighting broader societal concerns regarding sexual misconduct in the film industry. This case is viewed as a critical test of France’s commitment to addressing sexual violence and holding influential figures accountable in the post-#MeToo era.

If convicted, Depardieu faces up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (approximately $81,000).
