Joey Barton Found Guilty of Assaulting His Wife

Former Footballer Joey Barton Convicted of Domestic Assault

Former professional footballer Joey Barton has been found guilty of assaulting his wife, Georgia Barton, during a drunken altercation at their home in Kew, London, in June 2021. The court heard that Barton, 42, pushed his wife to the ground and kicked her in the head, resulting in a lump on her forehead and a bleeding nose.

Despite denying the charges, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring found Barton’s testimony “vague” and convicted him of assault by beating after a two-day trial. Barton received a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to pay £2,180 in prosecution costs.

The incident occurred after a night of heavy drinking with friends. During the altercation, Barton pushed his wife to the ground and kicked her in the head while their children were asleep upstairs. Although Georgia Barton initially retracted her accusations, the trial proceeded after an appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions. The couple remains married and continues to live together.

This conviction adds to Barton’s history of legal issues, including previous incidents of violent conduct both on and off the field. The case highlights concerns about domestic violence and the importance of accountability, regardless of public status.
