Bayo Onanuga: Stop Playing to the Gallery, Peter Obi
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has criticized former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for his recent remarks suggesting that democracy in Nigeria has collapsed.
Obi made these comments during a colloquium in Abuja marking the 60th birthday of former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, expressing concern over the state of the nation’s democratic system.
In response, Onanuga described Obi’s statements as exaggerated and lacking a solid logical foundation. He questioned how a democracy that has been strengthening over the past 26 years could be deemed to have collapsed.
Onanuga further noted that Obi’s ability to freely express his views is itself evidence of the functioning democratic system in Nigeria. He urged Obi to be mindful of his utterances and to refrain from making statements that could be seen as playing to the gallery.
