Ndidi Nwakuche Appointed CG of Nigerian Correctional Service
The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche as the substantive Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). This confirmation followed the presentation and consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
In his remarks after the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the urgency of addressing the recurring issue of jailbreaks in the country. He stated, “To whom much is given, much is expected. I hope that his appointment will bring an end to jailbreaks.”
President Bola Tinubu had earlier nominated Nwakuche for the position, citing compliance with Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019. The nomination was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Interior for further legislative scrutiny, leading to the recent confirmation.
Nwakuche’s appointment comes at a critical time when the NCoS is facing challenges related to security breaches and jailbreaks. His extensive experience in correctional management is expected to contribute significantly to reforms aimed at enhancing the security and efficiency of correctional facilities across Nigeria.
