Female Athletes to Undergo Swab Tests, Confirms World Athletics
World Athletics has announced the implementation of mandatory genetic testing for female athletes to verify their eligibility to compete in women’s events. This decision, aimed at preserving the integrity of female sports, was confirmed by President Sebastian Coe following discussions at the organization’s council meeting in Nanjing, China.
The testing process will involve a one-time, non-invasive cheek swab or dry blood spot test to detect the presence of the SRY gene, typically found on the Y chromosome and associated with male development. If necessary, additional assessments of testosterone levels may be conducted.
This initiative is part of World Athletics’ broader efforts to address concerns regarding fair competition, particularly in light of debates surrounding transgender athletes and those with differences in sex development (DSD). The organization had previously banned transgender athletes who had undergone male puberty from competing in female categories.
While the measure has garnered support from various stakeholders, it has also sparked discussions about privacy and the potential implications for athletes. World Athletics asserts that the tests are essential for maintaining fairness and is prepared to defend the policy against any legal challenges.
