Diego Maradona's Ex-Bodyguard Arrested for Perjury

Arrest of Maradona’s Bodyguard in Death Trial Scandal

Diego Maradona’s former bodyguard, Julio César Coria, has been arrested on suspicion of perjury during the ongoing trial concerning the football legend’s death. The trial, which commenced on March 11, 2025, involves seven healthcare professionals accused of negligence leading to Maradona’s passing on November 25, 2020.

Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Coria of providing false testimony, particularly regarding his interactions with Maradona’s personal physician, Leopoldo Luque. Coria claimed he had no contact with Luque before Maradona’s death and that they were not friends. However, evidence presented in court revealed WhatsApp messages between Coria and Luque discussing Maradona’s health and arranging social gatherings.

Additionally, Coria’s statements about resuscitation efforts were inconsistent. Initially, he did not mention any attempts by psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov to perform CPR on Maradona. Later, he testified that Cosachov had tried to revive the footballer.

The trial scrutinizes the actions of Maradona’s medical team, including Luque and Cosachov, who are charged with homicide by negligence. If convicted, they could face up to 25 years in prison. The prosecution argues that Maradona received inadequate care during his recovery from brain surgery, leading to his death from heart failure.

Coria’s arrest underscores the trial’s intensity and the commitment to uncovering the circumstances surrounding Maradona’s death. The proceedings are expected to continue for several months, with over 100 witnesses scheduled to testify.
