Immediate Past LG Chairmen Show Solidarity with Fubara

Rivers State LG Chairmen Visit Fubara in Solidarity

On March 26, 2025, the immediate past chairmen of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Rivers State paid a solidarity visit to suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara at his private residence in Port Harcourt. Led by Prince Ezebunwo Ichemati, former chairman of the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON), Rivers State Chapter, and ex-Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, the delegation expressed unwavering support for Fubara and his “Rivers First” agenda.

During the visit, the former chairmen reaffirmed their loyalty to Governor Fubara, urging Rivers residents to continue supporting his administration despite ongoing political challenges. They also prayed for divine intervention in the state’s political crisis, emphasizing the need for unity and law-abiding behavior among the populace to prevent adversaries from exploiting the situation.

This show of solidarity comes in the wake of significant political upheaval in Rivers State. On March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in the state, resulting in the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Retired Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the Sole Administrator to manage the state’s affairs during this period.

Prior to the state of emergency declaration, the Supreme Court had invalidated the local government elections held on October 5, 2024, which led to the termination of the tenure of these LGA chairmen. Despite these developments, the former chairmen have demonstrated their continued support for Fubara, highlighting the complex political dynamics currently unfolding in Rivers State.
