Political Appointees Suspended by Rivers State Government
On March 26, 2025, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, announced the immediate suspension of all political appointees in the state. This action affects positions including the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), the Chief of Staff, commissioners, chairpersons and members of boards, agencies, commissions, institutions, and parastatals, as well as all special advisers, special assistants, and senior special assistants.
This decision follows the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state’s House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. The state of emergency was declared in response to political instability and concerns over pipeline vandalism in the oil-rich region.
Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the Sole Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during this period. The suspension of political appointees is part of the broader measures implemented under the emergency rule to stabilize governance in Rivers State.
