Sen Nwaebonyi’s Response to Oby Ezekwesili’s Remarks
During a recent Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions hearing, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi and former Minister of Education Dr. Oby Ezekwesili were involved in a heated exchange.
The confrontation occurred while the committee was addressing sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Senator Nwebonyi explained that the altercation began when Dr. Ezekwesili allegedly told him to “shut up [his] mouth” and referred to him as a “hooligan.” He recounted, “I was addressing the presiding officer… when she turned to me and said, ‘Will you shut up your mouth?’… I said, ‘No, ma, withdraw that statement.’ But she repeated, ‘Will you shut up your mouth? You are a hooligan.'”
In response, Senator Nwebonyi retorted, “You are the hooligan,” and further accused Dr. Ezekwesili of being “an insult to womanhood.”
Dr. Ezekwesili attended the hearing to support Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had alleged that she faced punitive actions from Senate President Akpabio after rejecting his sexual advances.
The incident has garnered significant attention, with a video of the exchange circulating widely. In the footage, Senator Nwebonyi is seen verbally attacking Dr. Ezekwesili, who maintains her composure throughout the encounter.
