Reasons Behind Senate Panel’s Dismissal of Natasha’s Petition
The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions dismissed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, citing the matter’s pendency in court.
Chairman Neda Imaseun explained that the committee refrains from deliberating on issues currently under judicial consideration. Akpoti-Uduaghan contended that her court case pertained to defamation, not sexual harassment, but the committee maintained its stance.
This dismissal follows a prior rejection of a similar petition by Akpoti-Uduaghan, reinforcing the committee’s position on avoiding matters sub judice.
The situation has sparked debates on addressing sexual harassment allegations within legislative frameworks and the balance between legal proceedings and parliamentary inquiries.
