Sudan Military Leader Declares Capture of Khartoum

Khartoum Secured: Sudan’s Military Leader Reports Victory

On March 26, 2025, Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced that the capital city, Khartoum, has been “liberated” from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This declaration follows the military’s recapture of key strategic locations, including the presidential palace and Khartoum International Airport.

The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF began in April 2023, leading to a devastating civil war that has resulted in over 28,000 deaths and the displacement of approximately 14 million people. The RSF had seized control of significant parts of Khartoum early in the conflict, but recent military operations have shifted the balance, with the SAF reclaiming most of the capital.

Despite these gains, the RSF continues to hold territories in other regions, notably in western Sudan, including parts of Darfur. The ongoing conflict has led to severe humanitarian crises, with widespread displacement and shortages of essential resources.

The international community has faced criticism for its limited response to the crisis, with promised aid failing to materialize and diplomatic efforts being minimal. The situation in Sudan remains dire, with ongoing violence and a pressing need for humanitarian assistance.
