$100 Million Coin Collection Auction: A Hidden Treasure

Rare $100 Million Coin Collection Unearthed for Auction

A remarkable coin collection, valued at over $100 million and hidden underground for nearly 50 years, is set to be auctioned. Known as the “Traveller Collection,” it comprises approximately 15,000 rare coins from over 100 countries, spanning ancient Greece to 20th-century Britain. The collection will be sold over the next three years by Numismatica Ars Classica (NAC), with the first auction scheduled for May 20.

The anonymous collector began acquiring these coins after the 1929 stock market crash, focusing on pieces of rarity, beauty, and historical significance. During the 1930s, he and his wife traveled across the Americas and Europe, meticulously documenting each acquisition. Anticipating the turmoil of World War II, the collector buried the coins in aluminum containers, where they remained undisturbed for nearly half a century.

Highlights of the collection include a 1629 ducat of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, estimated to fetch over $1.4 million. Despite being buried for decades, many coins are in exceptional condition, thanks to the durability of metals like gold and silver.
