House of Reps Supports State of Emergency in Rivers

Presidential Age Limit Bill Passes Second Reading Successfully

The Nigerian House of Representatives has advanced a constitutional amendment bill that seeks to set an upper age limit of 60 years for individuals contesting the offices of President and Governor.

The bill, sponsored by Representative Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere from Imo State, proposes amendments to Sections 131 and 177 of the 1999 Constitution to enforce this age restriction and to require candidates to possess at least a bachelor’s degree.

If enacted, this legislation would render several prominent politicians ineligible for future presidential elections, including President Bola Tinubu (72), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (78), and former Governor Peter Obi (68).

This initiative follows the earlier “Not Too Young To Run” movement, which successfully advocated for lowering the minimum age requirements for elective offices in Nigeria.
