Controversy: Marvin Sapp’s $40,000 Fundraising Request
Gospel singer and pastor Marvin Sapp is facing criticism following a viral video that shows him urging his congregation to raise $40,000 during a church service. In the footage, Sapp instructs the ushers to “close the doors” to prevent anyone from leaving until the specified amount is collected. He emphasizes, “We all going to leave together. Y’all ain’t going no place but to the restaurant.”
Sapp challenges each member present, as well as those watching online, to contribute $20, suggesting that with approximately 1,000 attendees and an equal number of online viewers, they could collectively meet the $40,000 target. He remarks that $20 is a modest sum, noting that he used to spend that amount on dates with his late wife. For those seated closer to the stage, he requests a $100 donation, stating, “Because, again, it costs to sit up here.”
The video has sparked widespread backlash on social media, with many criticizing Sapp’s approach as aggressive and manipulative. Some users have humorously referred to the incident as the “Never Would Have Paid It” moment, a play on Sapp’s popular song “Never Would Have Made It.”
As of now, Marvin Sapp has not publicly responded to the criticism surrounding this incident.
