Fire Claims Lives of Olympic Skier and His Father

​Olympic skier Berkin Usta, 25, and his father, Yahya Usta, tragically died in a fire at the Kervansaray Hotel in Uludağ, Bursa, Turkey. The fire started around 5:30 a.m. on March 27, 2025, in the hotel’s cafeteria and quickly engulfed the building.

The hotel had its accommodation permit canceled in January but still had 12 staff members present during the incident. Several individuals were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the Ustas’ stay at the hotel and the cause of the fire.

Berkin Usta represented Turkey in alpine skiing at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and was a founder of the Skicraft team. His father, Yahya, served as the president of the Turkish Ski and Snowboard Teachers Association. Turkish Sports Minister Osman Askin Bak expressed deep sorrow over their deaths, extending condolences to their family and the sports community.
