House of Reps Supports State of Emergency in Rivers

Bill to Remove Immunity from VP and Governors Withdrawn

The Nigerian House of Representatives has reversed its earlier decision to advance a constitutional amendment bill aimed at removing the immunity granted to the Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.

This immunity currently shields these officials from civil and criminal proceedings while in office. The bill, sponsored by Solomon Bob (PDP, Rivers State), had passed its second reading on Wednesday but was reconsidered during Thursday’s plenary session following a motion by Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere.

The proposed amendment sought to promote accountability and transparency by allowing these high-ranking officials to be subject to legal proceedings during their tenure. However, the House decided to subject the bill to further debate, acknowledging the sensitive nature of the issues involved.

In addition to this, the House also rescinded its decision on a separate bill that aimed to review penalties for certain capital offenses. Both bills will be brought back for more extensive deliberation to ensure comprehensive evaluation and consensus among lawmakers.
