Sallah Durbar Canceled: Emir Bayero Addresses Tensions

Emir Bayero Cancels Sallah Durbar Amid Rising Tensions

Emir Aminu Ado Bayero of Kano has announced the cancellation of the traditional Eid-el-Fitr Durbar celebration, citing security concerns and emphasizing that the event is “not a do-or-die affair.”

In a late-night video address on Wednesday, Emir Bayero explained that the decision followed consultations with respected Islamic clerics, elders, stakeholders, and members of the Emirate Council, who advised that suspending the Durbar would be in the best interest of peace and public safety.

He urged the people of Kano to use the festive period to visit friends and family, fostering cordial relationships, and prayed for the community to receive Allah’s forgiveness and mercy during Ramadan.

This decision comes amid heightened tensions in Kano, particularly concerning the emirship position. Both Emir Bayero and his predecessor, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, had announced plans for separate Sallah Durbar processions, raising concerns about potential clashes between their supporters.

By canceling the Durbar, Emir Bayero aims to prioritize the peaceful coexistence of Kano’s residents during the Eid celebrations
