Former Minister Dalung on Nigeria’s World Cup Struggles
Former Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has voiced concerns over the declining performance of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, in World Cup qualifiers since his departure from office. Speaking during a visit to the Emir of Ilorin’s palace in Kwara State, Dalung highlighted that Nigeria’s last successful World Cup qualification was in 2018, achieved with a match to spare. Since then, the Super Eagles have struggled to secure a spot in subsequent tournaments.
Dalung attributed these challenges to poor sports management and administrative inefficiencies within the country’s football governing bodies. He emphasized the need for committed leadership and strategic reforms to revitalize Nigerian football.
Addressing the current World Cup qualification campaign, Dalung expressed concern over recent performances, particularly a disappointing draw against Zimbabwe, which has further diminished Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the next World Cup. He suggested that only extraordinary measures could salvage the situation and called for urgent interventions to address the systemic issues plaguing Nigerian football.
