UK Reveals Unclaimed Estates of Deceased Nigerians
The United Kingdom’s government has recently updated its list of unclaimed estates, revealing that numerous deceased individuals of Nigerian origin have left behind assets without identified heirs. These unclaimed estates, referred to as “Bona Vacantia,” become the property of the Crown if no rightful claimants come forward within a specified period.
The list includes detailed information such as names, dates of birth and death, and places of death of the deceased individuals. For instance, some of the Nigerians mentioned are:
- Arbel Aai’Lotta’Qua Abouarh: Born in Nigeria, died on February 5, 1998, in Chiswick, London.
- Adenike Adebiyi: Born in Nigeria, date of death unknown, passed away in Hackney, London.
- Akanni Jeremiah Adejumo: Born in Nigeria, died on March 31, 2017, in Muswell Hill, London.
These estates have remained unclaimed for varying periods, some extending up to three decades. The UK government maintains and regularly updates this list to provide potential heirs the opportunity to claim these assets. If no claim is made within 30 years from the date of death, the estate is removed from the list and becomes the property of the Crown.
Claiming an Estate:
Individuals who believe they may have a legitimate claim to any of these estates are encouraged to take the following steps:
- Gather Documentation: Compile a comprehensive family tree demonstrating your relationship to the deceased. This should include dates of birth, marriage, and death for all relevant family members.
- Provide Evidence: Obtain and submit official documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and any other records that substantiate your claim.
- Contact the Bona Vacantia Division (BVD): Reach out to the BVD of the UK Government Legal Department, which manages unclaimed estates. Detailed information and guidance on the claims process can be found on their official website.
It’s important to note that the process of claiming an estate can be complex and may require legal assistance. Potential claimants should ensure they have all necessary documentation and evidence to support their claims.
