Spanish Court Overturns Dani Alves’ Rape Conviction
Former Barcelona and Brazil defender Dani Alves has had his rape conviction overturned by a Spanish court. In February 2024, Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for allegedly assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. However, on March 28, 2025, the Catalonia region’s top appeals court annulled the conviction, citing inconsistencies and contradictions in the case.
The court found that the evidence presented during the initial trial was insufficient to uphold the conviction, highlighting gaps and inaccuracies in the complainant’s testimony. As a result, Alves, who had been released on bail after spending 14 months in custody, has been acquitted, and all travel restrictions have been lifted.
This ruling underscores the challenges in adjudicating complex sexual assault cases, especially under Spain’s revised consent law, which asserts “only yes means yes.” The decision may still be subject to appeal to the national supreme court in Madrid.
