Students Reject Remi Tinubu: Delta State College Response

The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences has issued a query to Student Nurse Osato Edobor for recording and posting a video on her TikTok page during the official visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on March 25, 2025. The event, held at the Dome Event Center in Asaba, was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, which included the distribution of 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South zone.

In the viral video, the event’s compere led a song referring to the First Lady as “our mother,” to which some students responded, “na your mama be this,” indicating their refusal to acknowledge Mrs. Tinubu as their mother.

The college’s query accuses Edobor of engaging in a “malicious act of recording/singing and posting an unofficial response to a song during the arrival of the First Lady,” which the institution deems a punishable offense under its Student Handbook. Edobor has been instructed to provide a written explanation within 24 hours to justify why disciplinary action should not be taken against her.

This action has sparked reactions from various quarters. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore criticized the college’s decision, describing it as an attempt to repress free expression. He has pledged to support Edobor both legally and physically to ensure she is not subjected to injustice.

Similarly, lawyer Inibehe Effiong condemned the college’s move, labeling it “sickening” and expressing astonishment at the institution’s approach.
