Mutu Claims Cocaine Use Ruined Ballon d’Or Chances
Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu has expressed regret over his past cocaine use, stating that it was the worst decision of his career and suggesting that, without it, he could have “easily” won the Ballon d’Or. Mutu joined Chelsea in 2003 and had a promising start under manager Claudio Ranieri. However, his tenure was marred by a positive cocaine test in October 2004, leading to a seven-month suspension and his release from the club.
Reflecting on this period, Mutu admitted that he was “alone and sad” and used cocaine in an attempt to cope, acknowledging that he should have sought help instead. He believes that his performances at Chelsea could have led to winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or award if not for his drug-related setbacks.
After his suspension, Mutu continued his career with clubs like Juventus and Fiorentina, where he achieved notable success. Despite the challenges, he remains one of Romania’s top football talents, sharing the national team’s all-time top scorer title with Gheorghe Hagi, each having scored 35 goals.
Currently, Mutu is pursuing a career in coaching, having recently managed FC Petrolul Ploiești in Romania. He continues to prepare for future opportunities while working with his football academy.
