
Onitsha Main Market Fire: Damage Report from Anambra
A fire broke out early this morning at Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, causing significant damage to several sections. The blaze began around 6:20 a.m. on Ifejika Street, near Sokoto Road, and quickly spread to adjacent buildings.
Firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service responded promptly to the distress call and are currently working to contain the fire. Chukwudi Chiketa, Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, assured the public that the situation is under control and urged residents to remain calm.
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, preliminary reports indicate that goods worth billions of naira have been destroyed. Traders watched helplessly as their merchandise was consumed by the flames.
Anambra State Police Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu has expressed sympathy for the victims and emphasized the importance of adhering to precautionary measures to prevent such incidents. He noted that no lives were lost and commended the efforts of the fire service and individuals who assisted in extinguishing the fire.
