US Cancels 300+ Student Visas Amid Pro-Palestine Protests

Over 300 Student Visas Revoked by US for Pro-Palestine Actions

The U.S. State Department has revoked more than 300 student visas, targeting international students involved in pro-Palestinian activism on college campuses. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the action, stating, “Maybe more than 300 at this point. We do it every day, every time I find one of these lunatics.”

This initiative, referred to as “Catch and Revoke,” employs artificial intelligence to monitor social media activity and identify individuals allegedly supporting Hamas. The program has been described as “a dramatic escalation in the U.S. government’s policing of foreign nationals’ conduct and speech.”

Among those affected is Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish Ph.D. student at Tufts University and Fulbright scholar. Ozturk was detained in Massachusetts and transferred to an immigration center in Louisiana without the 48-hour notice required by a judge’s order. She was not charged with a crime and was denied communication with her lawyer until her arrival in Louisiana.

Another case involves Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and Columbia University student. Khalil remains detained in Louisiana as a U.S. judge deliberates on the jurisdiction of his case. The Trump administration seeks his deportation, citing his involvement in pro-Palestinian protests and alleged inconsistencies in his visa application. Khalil’s legal team argues that his arrest targets him for his political activism.

These actions have raised significant concerns regarding civil liberties and the right to free speech. Critics argue that the revocation of visas based on political activity sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the principles of academic freedom and open discourse.
