Bayelsa State: Diri Stops Nyesom Wike’s Planned Visit
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has opposed a planned rally in support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, scheduled to take place in Bayelsa. Governor Diri cited security concerns as the primary reason for his opposition, emphasizing that the state government would not condone any activities that could disrupt the state’s peace. He has alerted security agencies, youths, elders, and traditional rulers to be vigilant regarding the development.
The proposed rally was organized by a group known as NEW (Nyesom Ezenwo Wike) Associates, led by George Turnah, the South-South Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and an ally of Wike. This initiative has led to tensions within the Bayelsa State chapter of the PDP, resulting in Turnah’s suspension from the party.
Governor Diri expressed concerns that holding such an event, especially amidst the ongoing political crisis in neighboring Rivers State, could exacerbate ethnic tensions and potentially lead to conflict within Bayelsa. He emphasized that any attempt to import the Rivers State political crisis into Bayelsa would be resisted.
In response, Nyesom Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, dismissed Governor Diri’s concerns as unfounded. Olayinka stated that Nigerians have the right to express support for anyone, anywhere, and at any time, and questioned why Governor Diri would raise a security alarm over a mere suspicion of people planning a rally.
This development underscores the growing political tensions in the region and highlights the challenges faced by the PDP in maintaining unity among its members.
