Tensions Rise: Trump Warns Putin Over Oil Tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed strong frustration towards Russian President Vladimir Putin over stalled peace negotiations concerning the Ukraine conflict. In a recent statement, Trump threatened to impose significant tariffs on Russian oil exports if Moscow is found responsible for obstructing efforts to reach a ceasefire and peace agreement.
Specifically, Trump indicated that he is considering implementing secondary tariffs ranging from 25% to 50% on entities purchasing Russian oil. These measures would effectively prevent businesses involved in buying Russian oil from operating within the United States. He emphasized that such actions would be taken if Russia does not engage constructively in peace talks to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
This development follows earlier threats made by Trump in January 2025, where he warned of imposing high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on Russian goods if a peace deal was not reached promptly. At that time, Trump urged Russia to “settle now and stop this ridiculous war,” highlighting his administration’s commitment to ending the conflict.
Despite the escalating rhetoric, Trump noted that he maintains a good relationship with Putin and expressed hope that the Russian leader would honor his commitments. However, he made it clear that failure to progress towards a peace agreement would result in economic repercussions aimed at pressuring Russia to cease hostilities in Ukraine.
