Gov Fubara and Family Depart State Government House

Understanding the Impact of Rivers on Mental Health

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed feelings of depression over the recent declaration of a state of emergency in the state. Speaking at his private residence in Port Harcourt during a visit from Muslim leaders on Monday, Fubara acknowledged the emotional toll of the political crisis. He stated, “We, as humans, might feel a bit depressed because of the situation. Maybe because of what we are seeing, but we might not understand that what is deeper and beyond us happened.”

Fubara emphasized the importance of resilience and patience, assuring that the state would emerge stronger from the current challenges. He urged citizens to remain steadfast and avoid provocations, noting, “Please be patient, don’t allow anybody to push you into any form of provocation because what they want is to destroy this state.”

The political crisis in Rivers State escalated when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency on March 18, 2025, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers for six months. This action was taken in response to prolonged conflicts between the executive and legislature, as well as incidents of pipeline vandalism. Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the state’s sole administrator during this period.
