Independence Bridge in Lagos Reopens to Alleviate Traffic
On April 2, 2025, Minister of Works Senator David Umahi directed the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, following its closure for planned maintenance and rehabilitation. The initial closure, which began on April 1 and was expected to last until the end of May 2025, resulted in severe traffic congestion across areas including Victoria Island, Ikoyi, and Falomo.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, confirmed the reopening directive and stated that her team is implementing remedial measures to restore the bridge for vehicular use. She acknowledged that some sections had been damaged during initial repair efforts but assured the public of expedited work to ensure safe passage.
The Ministry of Works expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the closure and appealed for public understanding and cooperation. Efforts are ongoing to carry out palliative works to make the bridge motorable, with comprehensive repairs scheduled for a later date.
The reopening of the Independence Bridge is anticipated to alleviate the severe traffic congestion experienced in Lagos, restoring smoother vehicular movement and reducing the hardship faced by commuters.
