INEC Declares Natasha Recall Petition Unconstitutional
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, does not meet the constitutional requirements. According to Section 69(a) of the Nigerian Constitution, such a petition must be signed by more than half of the registered voters in the constituency.
In this case, out of 474,554 registered voters, at least 237,278 signatures were needed. However, only 208,132 signatures were submitted, representing 43.86% of the electorate, falling short by 29,146 signatures.
Consequently, INEC stated that no further action will be taken regarding the recall process.
In response, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed gratitude to INEC for upholding justice and described the outcome as a victory against political manipulation.
