Lesbos Boat Tragedy: 7 Lives Lost in Migrant Capsize
At least 16 migrants have tragically lost their lives, and one remains missing, after two boats sank in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and the Greek island of Lesbos. Greek authorities reported discovering a sinking dinghy with 23 survivors out of 31 people on board; seven bodies were recovered, and a search continues for a missing girl.
In a separate incident, Turkish authorities recovered nine bodies and rescued 25 individuals from another boat, with one person still unaccounted for. The nationalities of the migrants have not been disclosed.
These incidents highlight the ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting to reach Europe via the eastern Mediterranean route, often in unseaworthy vessels. Despite favorable weather conditions, such tragedies continue to occur.
In response, Greece has intensified sea patrols, prompting smugglers to alter their routes. In 2024, over 54,000 migrants traveled to Greece by sea, and more than 7,700 by land from Turkey, with 125 reported dead or missing. As of March 30, 2025, more than 8,000 people had arrived in Greece by sea.
