$59M Royalty Increase for Nigerian and South African Artists

African Artists See $59M Royalty Growth from Spotify

In 2024, Spotify’s royalty payments to Nigerian and South African artists surged to approximately $59 million, underscoring the growing global appeal of African music. Nigerian artists received over ₦58 billion (about $38 million), more than doubling their earnings from the previous year. South African artists earned 400 million rand (approximately $21 million), marking a 54% increase year-on-year.

This significant growth is driven by increasing international recognition of genres like Afrobeats and Amapiano, propelled by artists such as Burna Boy from Nigeria and Tyla from South Africa. Spotify reports that 250 million user-generated playlists now feature at least one Nigerian artist, and 220 million include a South African act.

Export growth has been substantial, with Nigerian artists experiencing a 49% increase over three years, while South African artists saw a 104% rise in the same period. Notably, the number of Nigerian artists earning over ₦10 million annually has tripled since 2022, and the number of South African artists earning between 100,000 and 500,000 rand has doubled over the past three years.

These trends highlight the expanding global influence of African music and the increasing financial viability for artists from the continent in the streaming era
