
On April 2, 2025, in Galeshewe, Northern Cape, South Africa, 10-year-old Reatlegile Pitsoemang was attacked by a pit bull while playing in Phutane Street. She sustained severe injuries, including the loss of an eye and a skull fracture, and is currently undergoing reconstructive surgery at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the incident, focusing on potential negligence by the dog’s owner under the Animal Matters Amendment Act 42 of 1993. This act holds individuals accountable if their animal causes injury due to negligence, with penalties including fines or imprisonment of up to two years.
Following the attack, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) removed the pit bull from the owner’s property. Authorities have also urged the public to refrain from sharing graphic images of the victim on social media to protect her dignity and privacy.
