84-Year-Old Woman Charged with Fraud for Scamming Son

Elderly Woman Faces Fraud Charges for Champagne Lifestyle

Dionne Marie Hanna, an 84-year-old woman residing in Singapore, has been charged with multiple counts of fraud after allegedly deceiving her own son and other victims to fund a lavish lifestyle. Hanna faces five counts of fraud involving three individuals, including her son, Graham Hornigold, a renowned pastry chef. She is accused of conning victims out of their money after claiming she would reimburse them through her inheritance from Brunei’s royal family. The charges reportedly come after her alleged victims watched ‘Con Mum’ on Netflix, which detailed her deceptive actions.

Hanna allegedly contacted Hornigold in 2020, claiming to be his long-lost mother. Despite initial skepticism, DNA tests later confirmed a likely maternal relationship. However, Hornigold soon found himself financially supporting Hanna, who portrayed herself as a successful international entrepreneur. She convinced him to transfer substantial sums, promising reimbursement from her purported royal connections. The situation led to significant financial strain for Hornigold and his partner, Heather Kaniuk.

The charges against Hanna have drawn attention, especially after the release of the Netflix documentary ‘Con Mum,’ which shed light on her fraudulent activities. Following the documentary’s airing, Singaporean authorities received multiple complaints, prompting further investigations. Hanna is accused of deceiving victims by claiming terminal illness and promising reimbursement through her alleged Brunei royal ties. She also purportedly pledged substantial donations to a mosque and a non-profit organization in Singapore in exchange for financial contributions.

Hanna appeared in court via video link from Singapore’s Tan Tock Seng Hospital, though the reasons for her hospitalization remain unspecified. If convicted, she faces penalties of up to 20 years in prison, fines, or both.
