Umahi’s Take on the Allure of Coastal Highways
Dave Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, recently expressed his admiration for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, describing its beauty as inspiring thoughts of heaven. During an interview on Arise TV, he remarked that witnessing the highway’s stunning appearance led him to ponder the splendor of heavenly streets, suggesting it motivates one to strive for a better life.
Umahi provided an update on the project’s progress, stating that 30 kilometers of the first section, spanning from Victoria Island to Lekki Seaport in Eleko, Lagos, will be ready for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu on May 25, 2025. He highlighted the engineering challenges addressed, such as elevating the road above expected ocean flood levels, which has necessitated constructing retaining walls due to the road’s elevation affecting adjacent buildings.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a significant infrastructure endeavor aimed at connecting Lagos to Calabar, enhancing transportation and economic activities across key southern states. Umahi’s comments reflect the project’s ambitious scope and its potential to transform regional connectivity.
