The Impact of Democracy on Burkina Faso’s Growth
Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the interim President of Burkina Faso, recently asserted that no country has achieved development solely through democratic governance. He emphasized that democracy is the outcome of development rather than its catalyst, stating, “It is impossible to name a country that has developed in democracy. Democracy is only the result.”
Traoré, who assumed power following a coup in September 2022, has been steering Burkina Faso towards a governance model that prioritizes revolutionary principles over traditional democratic frameworks. This approach reflects his belief that significant societal transformation necessitates foundational changes beyond the structures of democracy.
This perspective aligns with the ideology of Sankarism, named after former Burkinabé leader Thomas Sankara, which advocates for self-sufficiency, anti-imperialism, and revolutionary governance. Traoré’s administration appears to be drawing inspiration from these principles, aiming to implement systemic changes that address the nation’s challenges.
