
Death Toll Rises to 124 in Dominican Republic Nightclub Tragedy
A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of April 8, 2025, when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, collapsed during a merengue concert by renowned singer Rubby Pérez. The disaster resulted in at least 124 fatalities and over 250 injuries.
Among the deceased were several prominent figures:
- Rubby Pérez: The celebrated merengue singer was performing when the collapse occurred.
- Octavio Dotel: A former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who played for 13 teams over a 15-year career.
- Tony Blanco: A former MLB player known for his time with the Washington Nationals and professional stints in Japan and the Dominican Republic.
- Nelsy Cruz: The governor of Monte Cristi province and sister of former MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz.
Rescue operations have been intensive, with emergency teams from Puerto Rico and Israel assisting local authorities. As of now, 145 survivors have been rescued, and efforts continue to locate any remaining individuals. The cause of the roof collapse remains under investigation.
President Luis Abinader has declared three days of national mourning and assured that all necessary assistance is being provided to those affected.
