Lamidi Apapa Claims Leadership of Labour Party After Ruling

Supreme Court Ruling: Apapa Takes Charge of Labour Party

On April 9, 2025, Lamidi Apapa, the former Deputy National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), declared himself the acting National Chairman following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified Julius Abure’s leadership.

The Supreme Court’s decision on April 4, 2025, set aside the Court of Appeal’s earlier recognition of Abure as the party’s national chairman. Apapa cited this ruling as the basis for his assumption of leadership, stating that all actions and decisions taken by Abure since April 2023 are now considered null and void.

In a press conference, Apapa announced that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) from 2022 would convene on April 14, 2025, to deliberate on future actions, including plans to revitalize the party’s Board of Trustees.

This development adds complexity to the Labour Party’s ongoing leadership crisis, with multiple individuals asserting claims to the chairmanship in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s verdict.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed its intent to peacefully reclaim all Labour Party offices nationwide, emphasizing the need to uphold the Supreme Court’s judgment.
