Trump’s Trade U-Turn: EU Suspends Retaliatory Tariffs
The European Union has announced a 90-day suspension of its planned retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, following President Donald Trump’s decision to pause certain tariffs he had recently imposed. This move aims to provide a window for negotiations between the two parties.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the EU’s preference for a negotiated resolution over a trade war and expressed openness to discussions on reducing tariffs, particularly in the automotive and industrial sectors.
The EU had previously authorized tariffs on $23 billion worth of U.S. goods in response to U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs introduced in March. These measures were set to roll out in stages but have now been put on hold to facilitate dialogue.
While the suspension delays the implementation of countermeasures, the EU has indicated that these tariffs could still take effect if negotiations do not yield satisfactory results. Additionally, the EU is preparing further responses that could target U.S. technology and services sectors if necessary.
