EFCC in Benin: Internet Fraudster Surrenders Voluntarily
A 28-year-old man from Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State has voluntarily surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Benin City. On Monday, April 8, 2025, he turned himself in to the Acting Zonal Director, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE I) Effam Okim, expressing a desire to abandon cybercrime and start anew.
The individual confessed to engaging in romance scams, wherein he impersonated a Chinese medical doctor working in a war-torn country. Using a mobile translation app, he communicated with foreign victims in Chinese, professing love and complimenting their appearance to deceive them into online relationships.
He stated that his decision to surrender was driven by fear of apprehension and a genuine desire for personal reform. The EFCC has commended his voluntary surrender, viewing it as a positive example of self-accountability and a growing awareness of the consequences of cybercrime. The suspect is currently in custody, cooperating with ongoing investigations.
