Kano Reports Confirmed Case of Lassa Fever
A confirmed case of Lassa fever has been reported at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano State. According to Salisu Inuwa, spokesperson for the hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control Unit, two suspected cases were recently admitted; one tested positive for the virus. The confirmed case was recorded on April 5 in Garun Mallam Local Government Area.
Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness endemic in parts of West Africa. It is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by rodent urine or feces. Person-to-person transmission can also occur, particularly in healthcare settings lacking proper infection control measures. Early symptoms include fever, weakness, and headaches, which can progress to more severe manifestations such as bleeding and organ failure if untreated.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has been monitoring Lassa fever cases nationwide. Between December 30, 2024, and January 19, 2025, the NCDC reported 214 confirmed cases and 39 deaths across 10 states.
Healthcare authorities in Kano are intensifying efforts to contain the spread of the virus, including contact tracing and public sensitization on preventive measures. Residents are advised to maintain proper hygiene, store food in rodent-proof containers, and avoid contact with rodents to reduce the risk of infection.
