A tragic helicopter crash occurred on Thursday, April 10, 2025, when a Bell 206 sightseeing helicopter plunged into New York City’s Hudson River near Pier 40. All six people aboard were killed, including a family of five from Spain and the pilot.

Victims

The passengers were identified as Agustín Escobar, CEO of Siemens Spain, his wife Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their three children, aged 4, 5, and 11. The pilot was a 36-year-old man. Four victims died at the scene, while two succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Crash Details

The helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, departed from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at 2:59 p.m. EDT for a sightseeing tour. Approximately 18 minutes into the flight, at 3:17 p.m., the aircraft experienced an in-flight breakup and crashed upside-down into the Hudson River. Witnesses reported hearing loud noises and seeing debris fall into the river.

Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash. The helicopter was a 2004 Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV, leased from Meridian Helicopters. New York Helicopters had a history of mechanical issues prior to the accident.

Reactions

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed condolences, calling the incident “terrible.” New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated, “Our hearts go out to the families of those who were onboard.” Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the crash as an “unimaginable tragedy.”

This incident marks the deadliest helicopter crash in New York City since 2018.​
