Meningitis Outbreak: 300 Cases Confirmed in Sokoto
The Sokoto State Government has confirmed over 300 cases of meningitis across several local government areas, prompting an intensified public health response. As of April 11, 2025, only 16 patients remain hospitalized, with the majority having been successfully treated and discharged.
In response to the outbreak, the state launched a sensitization campaign aimed at educating residents about the disease’s symptoms—such as high fever, vomiting, and neck stiffness—and encouraging prompt medical attention. The campaign, organized by the State Ward Development Committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, has received support from organizations like UNICEF and Médecins Sans Frontières.
This outbreak is part of a broader public health challenge in Nigeria’s northwest, which lies within the African Meningitis Belt. The region is prone to meningitis outbreaks, particularly during the dry season, and has previously faced significant challenges in controlling the disease.
