We Stand with Fubara: Rivers Women Protest Emergency Declaration
On Friday, April 11, 2025, women across Rivers State staged a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt, expressing their opposition to the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Dressed in black attire and traditional wrappers, the protesters marched through major streets, carrying placards with messages such as “Bring Back Fubara” and “We Support Fubara” .
Led by Nancy Chidi Nwankwo, the women demanded the immediate restoration of democratic institutions in the state, including the reinstatement of the elected governor. They criticized the emergency rule as unconstitutional and questioned the federal government’s rationale for imposing it in Rivers State while overlooking more severe security challenges in other regions like Borno, Yobe, and Kaduna .
The protest is part of a broader response to President Bola Tinubu’s March 18 declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state assembly. Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during this period .
