Registrar of Nursing in Nigeria: Our Country Needs You More Than Ever

The Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr. Faruk Abubakar, has appealed to Nigerian nurses to prioritize the country’s healthcare system over emigrating to Europe or America.

This plea comes as the NMCN implements stricter guidelines to regulate the verification of certificates for nurses intending to work abroad.

Starting March 1, 2024, nurses must have a minimum of two years of post-qualification experience, active licenses with at least six months validity, and letters of good standing from supervisors or training institutions.

This policy aims to address Nigeria’s critical shortage of health workers, as over 42,000 nurses left the country in the past three years.

While Abubakar clarified that the council does not oppose migration, he emphasized the need for a balance to maintain quality healthcare in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, nurses have raised concerns about harsh working conditions, inadequate pay, and systemic challenges driving emigration, urging the government to review these policies and improve the healthcare infrastructure.
