The Truth Behind Enhanced Security at Kano Palace: Insights from Shehu Sani
Shehu Sani, former senator and human rights activist, has commented on the heavy security presence around the Kano Palace amid the ongoing emirship tussle.
The conflict arises from the reinstatement of former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II by Governor Abba Yusuf, reversing his 2020 dethronement.
However, this move faces legal challenges and resistance from Aminu Ado Bayero, who was occupying the position.
Sani criticized the existence of a “federal emir” and a “state emir,” emphasizing that such a situation is unsustainable.
He proposed constitutional amendments to empower only the National Council of Traditional Rulers to appoint or remove traditional leaders, removing state governors from the process entirely.
This suggestion aims to depoliticize royal institutions and ensure stability in traditional leadership across Nigeria.
In the meantime, heightened security measures have been implemented to prevent unrest, while Kano residents appear largely focused on their daily lives.
Protests have been banned, and traditional leaders are calling for peace and resolution of the dispute
