Assassination Acknowledged: How Ukraine Targeted Russian General Sanctioned for Chemical Warfare
Ukrainian security services have claimed responsibility for the assassination of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops.
Kirillov, aged 54, was killed alongside his assistant in Moscow on December 17, 2024, when an explosive device concealed in an electric scooter detonated near a residential building on Ryazansky Prospekt.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) labeled Kirillov a legitimate target, accusing him of authorizing the use of chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces.
Since the onset of Russia’s invasion, Ukraine has documented over 4,800 instances of chemical weapon deployment by Russian troops, primarily involving K-1 combat grenades containing toxic irritants.
Kirillov had previously been sanctioned by the United Kingdom and the United States for his alleged involvement in chemical warfare.
His death marks the most significant loss of a Russian military official within Russia since the beginning of the conflict.
This incident is part of a series of targeted operations by Ukrainian intelligence against Russian military figures. Notably, on November 13, a car bomb in Crimea killed senior Russian naval officer Valery Trankovsky.
The Kremlin has not yet issued an official statement regarding Kirillov’s assassination. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, condemned the act as terrorism and indicated that a criminal investigation is underway.
