Gov Soludo Expresses Doubt Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Release Mitigating South East Insecurity
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has expressed skepticism that releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), would effectively resolve the insecurity challenges in Nigeria’s South-East region.
During a press briefing at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia on December 17, 2024, Soludo noted that criminal elements have exploited the Biafran struggle for personal gain, engaging in activities such as kidnapping, extortion, and murder under the guise of seeking independence.
He emphasized that the current insecurity has evolved beyond Kanu’s influence, with many perpetrators no longer adhering to his directives. Soludo stated, “The release of Nnamdi Kanu may not address growing insecurity in Nigeria’s South-East.”
The governor also highlighted that some self-acclaimed agitators are engaging in lucrative criminality in the region, further complicating the security situation.
Soludo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating insecurity, urging collaboration among stakeholders to address the complex challenges facing the South-East. He stated, “Insecurity is a monster that must be confronted collectively.
Anambra will no longer be a safe haven for criminals masquerading as freedom fighters.”
