Cybersecurity Breach: National Bureau of Statistics Site Compromised
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that its official website was compromised by hackers on December 18, 2024.
In a statement released via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the NBS advised the public to disregard any information or reports from the website until it is fully restored. The bureau’s technical team is actively working to resolve the issue.
Upon visiting the NBS website, users encountered a “Page Hacked” message, followed by an “Internal Server Error” during subsequent access attempts.
This incident occurred shortly after the NBS released its Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey Report, which highlighted that Nigerians paid approximately ₦2.23 trillion in ransom between May 2023 and April 2024.
The NBS has assured the public that it is diligently working to recover the website and restore its services. In the meantime, individuals are urged to rely only on official communications from the NBS’s verified social media channels and to disregard any unofficial reports or messages purportedly from the bureau.
