Activist Dele Farotimi States: ‘I’ve Never Lied in Advocacy’
Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has been released from the correctional centre in Ekiti State after meeting his bail conditions.
Farotimi was arrested earlier this month on allegations of defamation brought against him by Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Afe Babalola.
Upon his release, Farotimi stated, “In my public advocacy, I’ve never lied against anyone.”
He was granted bail by an Ekiti State Magistrate Court on December 20, with conditions including a ₦30 million bond and two sureties.
Farotimi’s arrest and detention sparked widespread outrage, with activists, legal practitioners, and civil society organizations condemning the action as an attempt to stifle free speech and dissent.
Supporters organized protests, launched social media campaigns with the hashtag #FreeDeleFarotimiNow, and initiated legal actions demanding his immediate release.
The case has been adjourned until January 29, 2025, at the Federal High Court and February 15, 2025, at the Magistrate Court.
This incident has raised concerns about freedom of expression and the use of defamation laws in Nigeria. Authorities emphasize the need to balance protecting individuals’ reputations with upholding democratic principles and free speech.
