South Korean Acting President Han Duck-Soo Faces Impeachment: What It Means for the Nation
On December 27, 2024, South Korea’s National Assembly voted to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo, who also serves as Prime Minister. The impeachment motion passed with 192 out of 300 lawmakers in favor, surpassing the 151 votes required for approval.
The impeachment stems from Han’s refusal to appoint three justices to the Constitutional Court, a decision that has been a point of contention with the opposition-controlled National Assembly. Han insisted on bipartisan agreement for these appointments, leading to the Democratic Party’s push for his removal.
Following the impeachment, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is set to assume the role of acting president. This development occurs shortly after the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol earlier in December, who faced removal due to his controversial imposition of martial law.
The political upheaval has raised concerns about stability and governance in South Korea, with the Constitutional Court expected to make a final decision on the impeachments within six months.
